FAQs

As you would expect, ITIL is a very hot topic at present and in this edition OGC's Jim Clinch answers two of the most frequently asked ITIL questions.

Q: I hear that OGC is getting rid of ITIL and it will be run commercially in future. What is actually happening, and can you reassure me that ITIL will still meet the needs of the UK public sector?

Q: I know the new ITIL publications are not like for like against the existing portfolio, I want to ensure I buy the correct titles, when will this type of information be released?

Q: I hear that OGC is getting rid of ITIL and it will be run commercially in future. What is actually happening, and can you reassure me that ITIL will still meet the needs of the UK public sector?

OGC's Jim Clinch says: OGC has no intention of selling ITIL. I think that the misunderstanding comes from an announcement made in November last year, calling for tenders for publishing and accreditation services for ITIL, PRINCE, MSP and M_o_R. These services are already provided by partners, however, existing contracts will soon expire and OGC is simply following the usual procurement process.

I am aware that many in the service management community feel that a key factor in ITIL's success is its ownership by a public body, keeping it free from commercial bias. OGC remains committed to its Best Practice Portfolio and ensuring that it meets the needs of the UK public sector. In the current ITIL Refresh project, my role of project assurance has been specifically created to represent this important user group.

Q: I know the new ITIL publications are not like for like against the existing portfolio, I want to ensure I buy the correct titles, when will this type of information be released?

OGC's Jim Clinch says: That is correct. Currently there are two main volumes that cover ITIL processes and these are supported by various topic-based books. In the refresh, we will move away from this structure in favour of a core set of five books. From a practitioner's perspective, this guidance will cover the ITIL journey from strategic considerations through to service retirement. These books will incorporate 100% of ITIL processes along with essential information currently covered by the topic-based books, creating a more complete picture of the ITIL journey.

A scoping document that shows the mapping of the current subject matter to the new version of ITIL will be released in May 2006. Download the ITIL Refresh Scope and Development Plan.
